The third and fourth graders have been working on reading fluency, which means being able to read smoothly and with expression. To practice, students were each given a Christmas picture book. They practiced reading their books for three days. Then, on the fourth day, they read their books to the first and second graders. Everyone did a great job!

On Halloween, grades 1-4 took place in a pumpkin math day. During this all-day activity students worked with pumpkins to figure out their weight, circumference, diameter, number of seeds, number of lines, and finally they painted them. It was a great learning experience for our students!
Recently, the third, fourth, and fifth graders took a trip to visit our state's capitol in Madison. They had their picture taken with our district's State Senator Neal Kedzie.
In art the fourth grade has been working with recycled materials to create mobiles and structures to be outside. Their function is to frighten away animals without hurting them, so that fruit, flowers and veggies are left undisturbed. The class created some very fanciful ones this year. The artwork is now in and beneath one of Traver's trees.
Fourth grade has been learning about genes and heredity in science. Recently, they did an experiment with dominant and recessive genes to see how many different looking Reebop offspring they could get.
Students in fourth grade are beginning a unit on electricity. The unit started with a lesson and experiment on static electricity. Students learned that static electricity consists of electrons or ions that do not move, and an object becomes electrically charged if it gains or loses electrons. Then, we did some experiments with balloons and our hair. Students had a great time and got to see what happens when they transfer electrons from one surface to another. Each year, the first through fifth graders participate in forensics. They create presentations of various types to present to the other students and families of Traver. Mr. Collins reported that everyone did a great job and he was proud of their efforts. Students are scored and those with high enough scores qualify to go to the district competition at the end of April. The kids in the pictures will be participating in the district competition. Good luck! |
